DIY is fun

The shower room that I started on 2 May is almost complete. There are lessons to be learnt to be sure.
  1. Don't trust a guy called Frank the Crank to install your ventilation fan.
  2. Don't pay a tiler on a daily rate. His idea of 4 days work will differ vastly from your own.
  3. Don't believe what the tubs of Grout claim can be grouted with their contents. Buy 3 times as much.
  4. Get 3 plumbers to give you quotes. Ignore any that you have to 'sell' the job to. Ignore any that scratch their head when you talk about shower pumps.
  5. Don't expect basins sold on ebay to have UK sized waste fittings.
  6. Don't buy tiles from any high street shop. ebay serves its purpose sometimes.
  7. Don't expect a guy called Frank the Crank to have any idea how a shower pump works. Humiliate him by calling the manufacturer directly.
  8. Be prepared for lots of dust. Smashing out old bathrooms is a dusty job.
  9. Be flexible. That 1 month timescale was never realistic. 3 months sounds much better.

Grumbles

Maybe i'm just in an unhelpful mood but it really peeves me off when there's a blatant  disregard for the work we do as Technical Authors.

Someone has decided that a document I'd spent three days on, needed a rewrite and they told me after the fact. This has made me quite cross and a little despondent.  No one has given me the heads up that this was happening, or attempted to explain why a rewrite was necessary, so that leaves me with the feeling that they just didn't like my work.

Maybe I'm just being a little touchy. Maybe my work was shit and they just didn't have the heart to tell me.

But I know that I'm a bloody good Technical Author so I'm not going to let this blip annoy me today. If they haven't got the sense to let me know when a document needs rework, that's their problem isn't it.

Weaning stories

So at 5 months we've been trying Emily out on more than just milk. Of course, this goes against the advice of Health Visitors who recommend nothing to pass their lips except milk for the first 6 months but the signs are there that Emily wanted more than just milk.

First try with baby rice was ok. She seemed to like the experience despite not eating much of it. By the third day though, and once we'd incorporated some fruit puree into the rice, she was wolfing it down. She's learnt to bang her hand on the high chair when she wants more so we have to be quick in spooning it to her. At the end of the meal, she howls when she sees the pot is empty. We're confident she likes her food :)

Last night we tried her with mushed carrot and potato. That didn't go down very well. Emily pulled a face after tasting it and we reverted back to the baby rice and puree when we realised despite some going into her mouth, most of it was ending up down her bib...
