Midnight visit from the police

So we've come back from holiday, got Emily off to bed, and were just about to go to bed ourselves when the doorbell rings. It's 11:15 and the outside light isn't working. We can't quite see who's out there.

'Who is it?' we shout through the door.
'Help me. Call the police.'

Oh shit. What's going on?

'What's the matter?'
'I've been attacked. Please help me.'

The voice belonged to a lad. Our area a nice safe middleclass area in uneventful Southport. We get nervous when we see hoodies walking down the street, let alone asking to be let into our house.

I got on the phone to the police and opened the door to the lad. He's 16, and is crying, and has a bloodied lip. Turns out he's had an argument with his mum's boyfriend and been on the receiving end of a punch. Who knows what actually happened but he seemed a nice kid.

We sat him in the kitchen and waited for the police to turn up and when they did, the lad was taken to the police station where he was going to wait for his dad to pick him up.

The lad accused his mum's boyfriend of being drunk. The first thing the police said to the lad when they picked him up, was 'How much have you had to drink?' So both parties were drunk.

The ambulance (oh yes, we had the paramedics round as well) said they were busy because of all the Saturday night drunks and a rave going on at Pontins.

Is that a link here? Would any of this happened with the booze?

So what about BT Vision?

It's been a couple of weeks since we've had BT Vision and so far it's doing very well. We still have Tivo hooked up so we can watch some programs we've recorded but I don't think either of us is missing Tivo as much as we'd feared. As I may already have said, BT Vision, being free, would have to be pretty shit to make us go back to the £10 a month deal with Tivo.

Things we like
  • It's freeness.
  • The video on demand library is great. Not had any problems streaming content over the Internet and I can't tell if it's any less quality than normal freeview broadcast quality.
  • The interface is slick. Love the transparancy.
  • Being able to record two channels at once. Although nothing new to Sky + customers, it's a great help for us.
  • 90 minute buffer

Things we don't like

These is nitpicking and could be called the list of Tivo features we miss.

  • Not being able to jump to the end of the live buffer with a single click.
  • Not being able to prioritise series links.
  • It's not smart enough to seek out alternative showings of clashed programmes.
  • No option to only keep a specified number of a programme. Great on Tivo to prevent it getting full of Eastenders.
  • TV Replay is cool but only a limited number of shows make their way onto here. iPlayer is rumoured to be arriving shortly.
